Your dream has come true - you have purchased an apartment in a skyscraper with a gorgeous view and a wonderful balcony. This open air space, despite it’s small area, can give you, after a sultry summer day, wonderful moments of relaxation in a green corner you have created, filled with magical aromas of flowers.
April is the best time to start landscaping your balconies. And, to the delight of amateurs, flower centers offer a fairly wide range of both planting material and various planting containers.
Here are some ideas to help you with this.
One of the characteristic features of modern residential buildings is the abundance of adjacent balconies protruding onto the facade, completely unprotected from the curious (albeit friendly) views of the neighbors.
But perhaps for an evening relaxation, you would like some privacy?
Since no engineering structures on the front side of the house are allowed, there is only one chance left - to fence oneself off from immodest looks with the help of a green wall made of living plants.
To embody this, you just need to fix a certain frame from the sides of the balcony to fix the guide-cords for future plants on it, or use a special mesh available on the market. Climbing plants launched on this grid form a reliable screen in a short time.
When choosing climbing plants that are designed to provide comfort and security, you can opt for annual or perennial options.
In the case of using perennials as they grow, you have the chance to create year-round coziness on your balcony if you so desire. However, it should be borne in mind that evergreens growing on the leeward balcony like ivy or trachelospermum, called "jasmine" in Georgia, will be severely damaged by fierce winds. Perennials will suffer less, but not evergreens, such as clematis and ornamental grapes - once planted, they will bloom every year and delight you again and again.
Keep in mind, though, that choosing perennials involves taking care of them all year round, which may not be in your plans?
In this case, you should take care and right now start growing with your own hands a wonderful screen of annual plants, and in a month your green wall will begin to grow, and at the end of May some of the plants will already bloom and will delight you until the onset of cold weather.
An added bonus - using annuals, you can grow your Live Trellis every season in a new color scheme. Climbing plants for trellises:
Well we grow "aliva green walls":
• along the end parts of the balcony on the floor we put planting boxes or pots about 25 cm high
• the presence of drain holes in the pot is required
• on the bottom we pour a layer (3-4 cm) of drainage (crushed stone, expanded clay
• we fill the boxes with fertile soil with a small content of peat. It is very helpful to add a hydrogel to keep the plants warm
• we grow plants in a non-seedling way - we place seeds pre-soaked for 2 hours into moist soil to a depth of about 2 cm. The seeding density depends on the specific plant.
Seedlings appear within 7-10 days, all this time the earth is kept moist. When the stems reach a certain height, we direct them along the grid.
While the green wall is growing, it's time to think about decorating the front of the balcony with plants.
A rather wide selection ofpots and balcony boxes is available on the market, which allows you to combine them in different ways.
Meanwhile, you can count on a much more colorful show if you group the pots in 2-3 points, place them at different heights and plant them with plants of different sizes, including ampelous ones.
Obviously, everyone chooses the color scheme according to their taste. Ornamental grasses also look very advantageous.
If you want to enjoy in the evenings not only the lush flowering, but also the aroma, sow an inconspicuous wonderfully fragrant plant - mattiola, a night violet.
Add thyme, mint, and basil to your pots to keep your summer evenings away from insect control. They are excellent at warding off such comfort violators.
Agree, it's nice to spend summer evenings in a green room that you have grown, filled with a magical aroma!
“Domino” wishes you all the best!
