The door is an indispensable element of any home to delimit space. This article will focus on interior doors.
They mostly consist of such material as MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and HDF (High Density Fiberboard). Each of them is a compressed and glued fiberboard. These are dense and durable materials that will serve for a long time, but at the same time, one cannot fail to note such an advantage of MDF as it’s plasticity, thanks to which the material can be easily formed. Various shapes can be cut out of it and given the desired shape. This is a nice fact if you are looking for something specific or special for a particular design, moreover, the MDF color scheme gives you an additional opportunity for this. In principle, if you want to achieve a certain color, MDF can be easily painted, because in production it is polished well enough to achieve a smooth surface. In addition, this material can also be veneered, coated with enamel and varnish.
Another additional plus is the environmental friendliness of MDF. It is produced using high temperatures, resulting in the release of natural, non-synthetic, binders.
MDF and HDF practically do not react to temperature changes, do not absorb moisture, do not crack, do not delaminate.
In addition to the above materials, doors can also consist of chipboard and fiberboard bases, as well as combined ones. Chipboard and fiberboard are boards consisting of pressed wood shavings or fibers. Doors of an inexpensive segment are made of them. Combined doors are doors made of wood frame and chipboard or fiberboard, as well as MDF panels. In both cases, their finish is important, but it can be different.
PVC and polypropylene dominate among the door finishes on the market. These coatings are good because they meet requirements such as impact resistance, moisture resistance, and wear resistance. Over time, your door will not fade or be scratched. By the way, PVC and polypropylene make it possible to give the doors the desired color and texture (wood, stone, leather, etc.).
Less common are veneered doors (veneered with chipboard and fiberboard) and solid wood doors. It must be understood that veneer is just a finish-coated one, which is made to improve the appearance of the door, but does not protect the door frame, like PVC and polypropylene. A solid wood door is an excellent environmentally friendly purchase that requires attention and care. For durable use in production, it is well polished, and after purchase it is varnished or painted.
Below are the points to consider when purchasing doors.
• Dimensions. On sale, you will most often find the following sizes: 700x2000, 800x2000, 700x2150, 800x2150, and the dimensions of the openings should be 800x2050, 900x2050, 800x2200, 900x2200. If you have a non-standard doorway, then there are two options for solving the problem - either you fit the doorway to the dimensions of the door and accessories, which will be discussed in the next paragraph, or it makes sense to order a door with the dimensions you need.
• The complete set of doors consists of many different parts. These are platbands, extensions, boxes, hinges, locks, handles. When installing the door, platbands and frames should be installed on both sides. Hinges are installed 2, or preferably three pieces (if the door is heavy, this will help to avoid skewing). Handles and locks are also integral parts of the door. The choice of locks depends on your needs, i.e. there is a choice of locks with and without a locking mechanism.
• Opening. An important aspect of door selection is the side that your door should open to. Little secret: if you see a door in the store's showroom and don't know which way it opens, pay attention to the hinges. If they are on the right side, then the door opens from left to right, if the hinges are on the left side, respectively, the door opens from right to left.
We have described the basic principles that you should follow when choosing interior doors. In part, the material for this article was collected based on questions from our consumers. We hope that this information will help you make the right choice, and on our website you will find everything you need - doors, accessories (platbands, boxes, hinges), locks.
