In a relatively short time, laminate has become one of the most popular floor coverings. It is easy to install, resistant to physical damage, and relatively inexpensive. Housewives will also appreciate the easy cleaning.
In this article, we will provide a quick overview of how to choose the right laminate for any room.
Types of laminate
Modern technologies make it possible to process the surface of any coatings for a specific texture. Laminate is no exception. It is made with imitation wood of various species, stone or ceramic tiles.
Classes of wear resistance of the laminate
The quality of the laminate is determined by the level of it’s wear resistance. Simply put, wear resistance is a parameter obtained as a result of tests of a laminate for abrasion, sound absorption, moisture resistance, and hit resistance. Most often, there are three classes of wear resistance:
• Class 31 (AC3) is suitable for a bedroom or a pantry, where there is a low level of traffic;
• Class 32 (AC4) is designed for medium-intensity loads and is suitable for some office premises and, of course, any room in an apartment (the period of intensive use is more than 15 years);
• Class 33 (AC5) is designed for long-term operation in high traffic areas and retains it’s appearance for more than 20 years.
Room type
The choice of laminate flooring depends largely on the room in which you will be installing it. Due to the high loads on the floor in the corridor and kitchen, the best option would be class 32-33 laminate. In addition, in the case of a kitchen, it is advisable to choose a moisture-resistant laminate with bevels that prevent water from entering the coating. For living rooms or children's rooms, 32 class laminate is optimal.
It is worth noting that choosing a more durable laminate for any kind of premises is not considered a mistake, and we do not recommend saving on wear resistance, since subsequently replacing a worn-out coating will cost much more.
For commercial premises, the rule is the same - the higher the class, the better, especially when it comes to cafes, restaurants, offices, receptions, gyms, etc.
Little life hack: diagonal styling can visually expand a small room, and with the help of color contrasts, you can influence the perception of a room.
Laminate size: what is important to know?
First of all, when choosing a laminate, you need to pay attention to it’s thickness, width and length. If the length and width of the planks are important only for calculating the required amount of materials per floor area, then the thickness of the laminate affects the impact resistance of the floor covering. The thicker the coating, the less risk of damage caused by falling heavy objects or constant loads under the weight of furniture. To use the laminate at home, it’s thickness should not be less than 7-8 mm. In addition, footsteps from walking are louder on the thin laminate.
Why are the water resistance and moisture resistance of the laminate important?
Important factors when choosing a laminate are moisture resistance and water resistance of the product. It is known that the influence of cold and dampness cannot be avoided on the ground floors of a building or in a private house, therefore it is better to purchase a floor that is resistant to moisture. It should be noted that laminate flooring will last a long time with proper care. If you spill something, the liquid should be removed immediately.
Skirting boards, sills and corners.
In order for the room to acquire a finished look after laying the laminate, the joints between the floor and the walls are closed with baseboards, and the inner and outer corners are placed at the turns. At the joints between two different coatings, sills are installed that hide the cracks and make the transition more beautiful.
What is formaldehyde class and what does it affect?
The formaldehyde class is important, as it is an indicator of the environmental safety of the coating and affects human health. An indicator of the normal, safe for children and animals amount of formaldehyde is a special icon on the packaging "E1", which means that the product has passed special tests and meets the required standards.
